Author Margaret Kell Virany finds a romantic love story from the twenties buried in letters, journals, diaries and photos left by her parents. A spark ignited in World War I develops into a lasting love in the snowy expanses and frozen lakes of the northern Manitoba bush inhabited by the Swampy Cree. They were an unlikely pair. She was a city councilor's daughter from Portsmouth, England (pop. 190,000) and he was a farmer's son from Cookstown, Ontario, Canada (pop. 550 not counting the pigs, sheep, horses and cows). They met in 1917 when her father, a Sunday school teacher, invited some colonial servicemen home for tea. The courtship is conducted on onion skin stationery over 5,000 miles between fog and bog. The writing recounts serving with the Canadian Navy in the North Sea, flying from London to Paris in 1927, crossing the Atlantic, canoeing up the fur trade route, and trekking in winter on a cariole toboggan to get to the hospital for a baby to be born. Day-to-day life of aboriginals is observed, as is the positive role of missionaries in that era. More than just a northern adventure story, it is the hard journey of two souls seeking to create a better world after the trauma of the war. The love story is presented by the author but written in Kathleen and Jack's own words.

It is written as blend of the actual letters and of telling the story told by the letter complete with needed background of the people, places, and relationships.

It is a bit rough (she forgets to call her mother Kathleen instead of Mother in one place, and some details seem to be added because they are known rather than because they contribute to the story, things like that). That added to the charm for me as my parents and grandparents used to tell our family history in the same way. And some of said details are really interesting in and of themselves. However, don't expect it to read like fiction.

I liked that the author didn't do too much revisionism. I think Jack shows a good deal of respect for the Cree while operating in the context of the times.

It is nice to get a far-north story/perspective from someone who genuinely lived it.

Overall I simply enjoyed the book.

It is a beautiful love story, quick read and meaningful pictures that really capture your heart. I'm not familiar with the Canadian landscape, but this makes me want to research more!
I'm also a Kell by marriage (having emigrated from Sweden to Canada in 1987) and it's very interesting to me to learn more about my "Canadian" family history. It will definitely be of interest to anyone else wanting to know a little more about life in Canada in the early 1900's. A very well written book indeed. Marg is weaving an enchanting tale and it keeps you spellbound from start to finish. Well done - and Thanks!
Helene Kell, New Westminster BC
For a work that is more or less autobiographical, give or take a generation, it is quite rigid and factual. Almost as if written by an observer from afar, who has little connection. Knowing of the strict limitations the author was bound by whilst growing up may explain the lack of emotion. I felt it could have done with a sprinkle here and there, just to make the reader remember that they aren't reading a documentary or factfile on the history channel. It is however a realistic representation of a specific area, era, culture and almost forgotten blink of an eyelid in time, that is worth a gander.
A vivid portrayal of the idealism, optimism, earnestness and romanticism of a young couple. He, returned from fighting in The Great War (1914-1918) and she, an English city girl, willing to become a minister's wife in Canada's northern forests.

I loved it.
Fond memories flash into my mind while reading this well written story, "Kathleen's Cariole Ride". In the early 1950's, I had the privilege of meeting and associating with the Author and her family. From time to time, during those visits, Kay and Rev. Jack Kell would relay segments from of their adventures. Marg has done a remarkable job by expanding and searching out details which piece together those tantalizing verbal reminiscings which continue to remain in my memory.
book on the author's parents and their short sojourn in Northern Canada 90 years ago breathes life into a picture of native relations, missionary fever, and northern living some 90 years ago. I found the story to be captivating and enjoyable - the story line is clear and focused, and it is written with a sense of excitement and involvement that captures the reader's attention. The fact that the author is writing a brief history of her own parents in rough living conditions and with a different set of cultures show how much the background of our north has changed in less than a century.

Accountant's Vision
Margaret Kell Virany tells in superb writing style her family story, notable that of her mother Kathleen, a courageous British women who made immense personal sacrifices, left everything behind - family, friends and way of life - to follow her husband in 1927, as (probably) the last war bride from WWI right into the Northern Canadian Wilderness to help evangelize the First Nation Indians.

War brides, moved thousands of miles away - usually to Canadian cities, villages and farms - joining their husband, a man they barely knew. Kathleen's future husband, a minister, worked and lived on the extremely remote reservation of Oxford House, Manitoba, in Canada's northern wilderness, close to Hudson Bay.

After Margaret Kell Virany's parents died, she found diaries, photographs and love letters that let us peek into a fascinating social history, describing challenges and details of pioneer life on this Northern reserve and struggle in a minister's family.

Many touching stories and exciting details include canoe trips along the old fur trade route, generous native neighbors, a dangerous journey to the hospital in mid-winter on a horse drawn toboggan to deliver her baby, life-threatening forest fires and pre-television social life.

I read "A Cariole Ride" with great pleasure, almost non-stop, it is a real page turner and I highly recommend it!
