One of the most prophetic novels ever written.

The Great Pacific War tells the fictional history of a war between the United States and Japan between 1931 and 1933.

First published in 1925, Hector Bywater anticipated many of the details of the conflict in the Pacific during the Second World War.

Written in a manner only possible for the most devoted experts of the subject, Bywater presents an eerily plausible account of a war between these two great naval powers.

His account focuses on the naval actions of the war, describing great battles between a technologically-advanced and well-trained, but under-resourced Japanese fleet and an American navy that continues to grow in strength.

Exciting depictions of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, the defence of Guam, and inventive American counter-attacks involving the use of dummy ships fill Bywater’s intriguing narrative.

Bywater makes use of all the conventions of the historian, including the use of quotations from many invented sources from both the American and Japanese sides.

His account is so convincing that at times it is surprising to remember that it was a work of fiction. From the implications of the Washington Disarmament Conference to the specifications of the Denver-class cruisers, his expert understanding of naval affairs shines.

The admirals, politicians and soldiers that drive the plot are a mix of complex, interesting characters, at once displaying great heroism and exasperating recklessness.

At a time when his contemporaries were often dismissive of the abilities of the Japanese military, his work stands as a startling warning of a conflict that would begin soon after his death.

Hector C. Bywater (1884-1940) was a British journalist, military author and spy, primarily focused on naval affairs. His 1925 work The Great Pacific War correctly predicted many of the actions that the Japanese and Americans took during WWII; indeed, it was later revealed that many military leaders had used it as a resource in their strategic planning.

This books is historical fiction done in an entirely different way than you see now. This book is about a war between the United States and Japan which supposedly happened in 1931 and is being written about several years after. The twist is that this book was written in 1925! The author, Hector C. Bywater, is a naval authority who is taking a real look at the possibility of a war between the two nations 16 years before it really happens! He is able to weave a very believable and seemingly accurate tale of how Japan comes to attack the United States and all of the issues of a war between them. By the time the real war came between them, some of the considerations he gives have changed, but not that many which makes the story seem like he really did forsee what would happen when the two nations came to blows.

The writing style is very different from the history books you read by current authors. Here the chapters read like news reports of the events as they supposedly happened over time prior to the writing of this book. There is a little previewing of things to come sprinkled throughout so when reading of certain events, you are indicated to wait till he is able to return to this subject in a later chapter to hear further regarding the event or major participants who have other roles to play in the story. It takes a little while to get use to the style, but it is well worth the effort.

I think near the end of the book, the author is really stressing his views that both Japan and the United States need to do all they can to prevent the events that he has written about from ever coming to pass. He seems to be pleading with both nations to not let this happen for real. To keep these news stories in fiction which alas they do not. The weight of his pushing his view that the participants should not have let the conflict come about seems to me to be the motive for him writing the book in the first place. He is trying to show both nations that no one will win in a war between them no matter who comes out victorious.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a good history full of analysis and not just a chronology of battles fought. This book has a depth to it which I have not seen in other historical fiction I have read. If you are well read on the Pacific War part of World War II, you will find much in here which is familiar and yet different. If you are interested to read how someone is able to forsee future events, you should read this book since this is indeed a well researched and thought out description of what the author feared would happen and unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your view, he did not live to see come about since he died the year before hostilites started.

Great Pacific War A History of the AmericanJapanese Campaign of 193133 edition by Hector C Bywater Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This book was touted as a prescient view of the war between Japan and the United States, which actually did not come for another 16 years. As a prediction, it was not exactly ground breaking; the book more or less followed the Navy's Orange Plan. I suppose the importance of aircraft to the operations described in the book may have been somewhat fore-looking, given the state of aviation, and especially naval aviation, in 1925, but there were two major plot flaws first, the book predicts that the Japanese treated their prisoners benevolently and with all chivalry, which even in 1925, we would have known would not be the case, and second, the role of poison gas, which no one used in the coming war. Finally, the book supposes that the United States fought the was without allies, such as Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain. The Biggest flaw, however, was the writing. This book came as close as possible to having been written entirely in the passive voice. This made it very difficult to read, and difficult to figure out who was taking what action. I recommend that you do not waste your time.
An interesting, good story, and given that it was written in the 20s, a fairly prophetic prediction of the Pacific part of World War II. Some things, the author gets right and some he gets wrong.

Right? Japanese sneak attack, not on Pearl Harbor, but on another critical part of the American War effort, perhaps just as bad as Pearl. He envisions the initial Japanese victories, the delay while the US builds up its forces, and the slow island hopping to recapture the Pacific. He even shows some of the deception the allies used against Germany, only against Japan in the book. The small unit actions were similar to what I've read of the Guadacanal fights. The long range efforts with submarines and mining were interesting and not dissimilar to reality. The critical nature of Japan's supply and raw materials problem were showcased.

Wrong? No Pearl Harbor (despite the blurb on the book). The Japanese in the book treated their prisoners with respect according to the Geneva convention unlike the real Japanese. The Japanese in the book weren't so fanatical that they'd flight man, woman and child to the last person. The final peace was negotiated, though the Japanese were clearly on the losing side. Airpower in the book, though important, didn't have the decisive nature that it had in WWII -- there was still an epic battleline fight as at Jutland. The japanese in THIS book were the Japanese from the Russo Japanese War -- clients of the British. Lastly, our real war was part of another World war, not an isolated war between the US and Japan.

Even so, if the Japanese DID read this book, they should have read to the ending because all the issues that led to their failure were right there to read -- lack of raw material, inability to replace their man and material losses, dependency on sea lines of supply, dependency on overseas possessions, etc.

In the Russo Japanese war, the Japanese learned (or thought they did) that they could take on a huge world power and win if they could roll up some victories in the early stages. They never invaded Russia it's true, but Russia had other problems that prevented them from an all-out war on Japan. Those same issues weren't going to keep the US from winning this one. If Russia had attacked Japan the way Russia attacked Germany in World War II they may have drawn different conclusions.
